The third piece rule

Have you ever heard of the third-piece rule? We hadn't either until we came across an article I read on The Cut , which explains that in order to encourage a more stylish sales staff in any retail working environment, retail associates are supposed to wear outfits on the job comprised of three pieces, not including your shoes. Your pants is piece one and top is your second piece. Hence comes your third piece which should be an extra outfit element such as a jacket, blazer, vest or statement accessory such as a tassel necklace, trendy optical sunglasses, a belt or even a mere bold color non essential piece. The Cut reported that the third-piece rule is also in effect at Nordstrom, Banana Republic and,  Madewell. What I like about the "Third piece rule" is that makes you look put together, polished, more interesting, and effortlessly chic.

So, everyday, while getting dressed, try the same outfit, but each time adding a different piece, taking your look from casual to sophisticated in one easy step. You can easily dress up an outfit with the same rule by adding a statement necklace or over the top heels. Give it a shot and then, try as you get more comfy with the concept, adding fourth and fifth pieces to take the effect to the next level.
